Jordina Millà & Barry Guy
Jordina Millà (piano), Barry Guy (double bass)
Jordina Millà and Barry Guy first crossed paths at the Festival Mixtur, in Barcelona, in 2017, where Guy was resident composer, creating a work with professionals and students. Millà, one of the pianists of the group, stood out immediately for her “commitment, energy, virtuosity and creativeness”, and that was the birth of the musical friendship between the Catalan pianist, resident in Austria, and the British double bass player, resident in Switzerland.
Guy and Millà recorded a studio album together, String Fables (2021). Subsequent to that, they released Live in Munich (2024) with the ECM label, highly acclaimed by critics, which vividly captures their concert of February 2022 at the Schwere Reiter hall in Munich. As a record, it islargely free improvisation, but with free-flowing and highly detailed musicof ever-changing mood, that casts new light on unconventional, innovativemethods to produce sounds and effects that broaden the possibilities ofsound and go beyond traditional techniques of the instrument. To definethe swirling, undulating sound of their music, Millà draws analogies withthe movements of the sea, “so full of life and dark at the same time”.
Barry Guy, famous for his capacity for improvisation to bring out the fullsound potential of the double bass, is well accompanied by Millà, who, inaddition to her extraordinary ability on the keyboard, is opening up awhole new sound world, with her inventive explorations of what lies deepwithin the piano, extracting stunning textures and amazing harmonies.
